Growing the Bentall Green Oak Forest

Bentall Green Oak runs the Trees in Tenure program; employees at Bentall Green Oak will have a tree planted in their name for every year they work at the company. The tree plantings are administered by Forest Recovery Canada along with their network of national forestry partners across North America.

In celebration of its 100th anniversary, Bentall Green Oak sponsored tree planting efforts in nine different locations during the spring and summer of 2012, including seven sites in Ontario, one in Manitoba and another in Seattle, Washington. These plantings were also administered by Forest Recovery Canada with field work completed by five of Forest Recovery Canada’s national partners. In total, 25,000 trees and shrubs took root as a result of Bentall Green Oak’s support. Over their lifetime, these trees will sequester 26,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide and produce 6,000 tonnes of oxygen.

Species selection was dictated by local site conditions and site objectives. Most sites were planted with the long-term objective of obtaining a natural and diverse forest. As well, the sites were located in highly fragmented landscapes and the reclamation of these sites to forest will have the added benefit of enhancing the connectivity of the natural environment, which will enhance the resiliency of the forests to the effects of climate change.
